Before the Exam

Review your medical records and know your diagnosis, diagnostic code, and current treatment plan Write a detailed personal statement describing how your condition affects your daily life, work, and relationships Note your worst days — the VA rates based on your overall impairment, not your best day List all medications you take for this condition and their side effects Prepare a timeline of your condition from onset through current symptoms Hearing loss ratings are based strictly on audiometric test results, not subjective complaints Do not wear hearing aids during the exam — the VA tests unaided hearing Document your noise exposure history during service Note how hearing loss affects daily communication and work

What to Bring

Government-issued photo ID Copy of your VA claim confirmation or notification letter List of all current medications and dosages Copies of relevant medical records (the examiner may not have seen them) Personal statement or notes about how your condition affects daily life Buddy statements from spouse, family, or fellow veterans (if available) Any recent test results, imaging, or specialist reports Previous audiograms or hearing test results Documentation of noise exposure during service (MOS, equipment used)

After the Exam

Request a copy of the C&P exam report through your VA.gov account Review the report for errors or omissions as soon as possible If the examiner missed something important, file a statement noting the error Continue all medical treatment — gaps in treatment can hurt your claim Check your claim status regularly at VA.gov
