What This Self-Assessment Is

The self-assessment quiz above is a structured way to think through the conditions you may be eligible to claim and roughly estimate what each one might be rated. It walks you through common service-connected conditions, asks you about the severity and frequency of your symptoms in plain language (rather than the legalese of the VA's rating schedule), and translates your answers into estimated individual ratings using the criteria in 38 CFR Part 4. It then combines those individual ratings using the same VA "whole person" math the combined rating calculator uses, and shows you what monthly compensation that combined rating would correspond to under the current pay tables.

Your answers stay in your browser. The quiz does not collect, transmit, or store any personal or medical information. There is no account, no email collection, and no lead-generation.

What This Self-Assessment Is Not

This is the most important section on the page. The quiz is a teaching tool, not a medical or legal opinion. Specifically:

  • It is not a diagnosis. Only a qualified medical provider can diagnose a condition, and only a service-connected diagnosis is eligible for VA disability compensation.
  • It is not a VA decision. Only the VA, after reviewing your service treatment records, your medical history, and a Compensation & Pension exam, can issue a real rating decision.
  • It is not legal advice. We are not VA-accredited attorneys or claims agents.
  • It cannot account for everything. The quiz does not model Special Monthly Compensation, Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU), pyramiding, effective dates, or borderline cases where two diagnostic codes could apply. Your actual award may be higher or lower than the estimate.

How This Assessment Works

This self-assessment tool asks you to select conditions and describe your symptom severity. Based on your answers, it estimates what VA disability rating you might receive for each condition, then combines them using VA math (the "whole person" method defined in 38 CFR § 4.25).

Your estimated rating is a starting point — not a diagnosis or guarantee. The VA determines your actual rating through medical evidence review and a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam. Many factors affect your final rating that a self-assessment cannot capture.
