VA Disability Benefits by State
State-specific VA resources, regional offices, veteran population data, and state benefits for disabled veterans.
Your VA disability compensation is set by federal law and does not change when you move — but almost everything else about being a disabled veteran does. Property tax exemptions, vehicle registration waivers, free hunting and fishing licenses, in-state tuition waivers, state veterans homes, and which VA Regional Office processes your claim all depend on the state you live in. The state guides on this page document the state-specific benefits that stack on top of your federal compensation, plus the actual VA Medical Centers and Regional Offices serving each state.
A few states are worth highlighting because their state-level benefits substantially change the math for disabled veterans. Texas offers a tiered property tax exemption that goes to a full exemption at 100% disability and adds the Hazelwood Act for tuition. Florida exempts 100% disabled veterans from property tax entirely and has no state income tax. California offers the Disabled Veterans' Property Tax Exemption with a low- and basic-income tier that scales annually. Several states (including Texas, Florida, Wyoming, and Tennessee) also have no state income tax, which means VA disability compensation, military retirement pay, and all other federal benefits are never reduced at the state level.
Which VA Regional Office handles your claim is also state-dependent and matters more than most veterans realize: regional offices have different workloads, different historical grant rates, and different processing speeds. Your assigned office is set by your residential address, and changing addresses can change your office. Each state guide below lists the controlling Regional Office (and its address), the major VA Medical Centers in the state, and the state-specific tip we would give a veteran filing from that location. For the federal claims process itself — which is identical in every state — see How to File a VA Disability Claim.
